Lucrezia Borgia
Lucrezia Borgia was the daughter of a Pope, Pope's aren't even meant to have children. She was not the only child, she had 2 or 3 other actual siblings and then a few more that are her half brothers and sisters. Her mother was Vannozza dei Cattanei, one of the many mistresses of her father ,the Pope. She had a few children with her father, so she was the mother of a few brothers and sisters. Lucrezia is cast as a femme fatale, a role as she has beenshown in many portraits, books/novels and movies.Several marriages were arranged for Lucrezia. She married three men, Giovanni Sforza (Lord of Pesaro) , Alfonso of Aragon (Duke of Bisceglie) and Alfonso I d'Este (Duke of Ferrara). It is said that Alfonso of Aragon was the son of the King of Napels and that Lucrezias brother ,Cesare, had him murdered after his political value waned.
Lucrezia had previous engagements to a man called Don Gaspare Aversa ,who was the count of Procida. But when her dad ,the Pope ,became Pope he wanted more powerful families so he called of the engagement and forced her to be married to be Giovanni Sforza who was Lord of Pesaro. They married on the 12 June 1493 in Rome. But when the Pope no longer needed Giovanni and his family, and ordered his execution. The Pope tried to get Giovanni's uncle to persuade him to agree to the divorce but he refused. The Pope said that their marriage had not been consummated and offered Giovanni Lucrezia's dowry for his cooperation. A year before she was going to marry Alfonso of Aragon ,she gave birth to a little boy called Giovanni but some historians claim that he was called Infans Romanus. But rumours that she was the mother have never been proved.
Lucrezia is described to have: beautiful ,heavy blond hair that fell past her knees, a beautiful face, hazel eyes that supposedly changed colour and a fantastic grace that made her appear to be walking on air. These were the sort of features that were appreciated during the Italian Renaissance. But a description from another person said that she had a rather big mouth, very white teeth and that she had a slender and fair neck. In 1510 she met the famed French solider,Chevalier Bayard. He said he was a pearl amongst women. How much of this she showed back is unknown. Lucrezia Borgia sadly died on the 24 June 1519 after giving birth to her 8th child.
